Bibliography

The complete bibliography of They Are Lying to You: The Self-Help Delusion. Every book and paper cited in the notes, some eight hundred entries in four parts, with a link to the source wherever one could be given, so you can check the evidence yourself rather than take my word, or anyone’s, for what it says.

About the book

The complete bibliography

The Self-Help industry survives on filters: the summary of a summary of a press release of a paper nobody in the chain has read. More than once in Lying to You we have seen how a claim in a self-help book turns out to be unsupported by the very study cited beneath it. In several cases, the study flatly contradicts the claim it was enlisted to support.

The complete bibliography, which given its size was replaced in the book with a more manageable “Suggested Reading”, includes all of the books and all of the papers cited in Lying to You.

For the papers, to the extent that was possible, I added URLs to the citation so you could read the documents yourself. This is particularly important to understand both the scope and the nuances around a particular topic. As I mentioned in On Scope, Method, and Sources, the note on method at the end of the book, given the vastness of the topic treated, in the book I was forced to summarize a whole book or a selection of papers in one line. Reading the original makes a difference.

Some of these URLs lead to the paper itself; some to public repositories where the full text can be downloaded; some, unavoidably, to aggregator sites that keep the text behind a paywall. In those cases, searching the DOI or the title through institutional repositories, preprint archives, the author’s own page, or a library will often turn up a version you can read, though some sources stay behind a paywall for good. Every address in the notes was live and carried the material cited as of September 8, 2026.

If you have purchased the book, you have access to the Resource page, where I have organized the bibliography in four parts for ease of use, and where you can download them individually or as a whole.

Enjoy the read.

On the notes

The notes serve two purposes. The first is to keep the main text clean: a sentence forced to carry every qualification, citation, and digression moves at the pace of someone walking uphill in winter, during a blizzard, barefoot. The qualifications wait in the notes, available to the reader who wants them and out of the way of the reader who does not. The second is to make the argument auditable.

Much of this material I read in electronic editions in my personal library, whose pagination shifts with both the format and the device and rarely matches the printed book. Where the edition had stable pages I give them; where it did not, the note gives a chapter or a section of the work cited. Classical texts are cited by the standard reference numbers, which do not depend on any edition at all.

I have read every work in the bibliography, books and articles alike, and have checked every citation against its source. Where a note gathers a larger body of literature, I have read the studies on which the argument rests, though not always every item listed.

Errors

If you find an error in these pages, of fact, citation, or arithmetic, write to me: a book that demands evidentiary accountability from others should say plainly that it accepts the same standard.

The errors that remain are all mine.
