About the Book
What the book is about
The self-help industry has sold the same promise for a century: whatever isn’t working in your life is your fault. And the fix is one more book or seminar away. What once needed a stage or a bestseller now needs only a microphone. On a million podcasts, hosts and guests who have “understood life” are eager to tell you, with untroubled assurance, how to live yours.
In They Are Lying to You, two questions run through every chapter: does the advice actually work, and is the account of the good life beneath it even coherent? The book reads the industry like a translation, checked against the original, and tests both. The industry fails: the science it cites is often wrong, overstated, or stripped of the conditions that made it true; the advice works, when it works at all, in far narrower situations than industry admits; and the picture of the good life beneath does not survive examination.
At the core of this business lies a distinction most “gurus” have never noticed, and the few who have keep from you. Aristotle separated techne, skill within a defined craft, from phronesis, the practical wisdom of living a life as a whole. The industry sells techne and calls it phronesis. Why the swap fails, and what a good life asks for in its place, is the question the book follows to the end.
